I cut stencils (katagami) in simple patterns and combine them in different ways, leading to new patterns every time I print. The process is complex, and the result is a bright, intense coloured print on silk. The rice paste consists of a mix of glutinous rice flour, finely ground defatted rice bran, calx, glycerine, and salt. This mix is steamed for 50 minutes before the dye is added to the paste. After the rice paste is applied, the stencil is removed. Before the second layer will be applied, the first layer needs to be completely dried up. In this case, the colours overlay. The first printed colour will be dominant, because the rice paste covers the silk fabric in a way that any applied layer after the first one, will not go through. Carefully packed in paper and felted wool, the fabric will be subjected to 50 minutes of steam fixation. This process binds the dye and the textile its fibers completely. The starting point: What is a resist print? Simply said when you print with a paste that blocks the fabric when it is to be dyed, it creates a white pattern. There are a lot of different materials and methods to work with, depending where you live. In this workshop we focused on printing with Japanese Katagami stencils and we explored 3 printing pastes. 1. Rice paste, Japanese recipe. 2. Soy and Lime paste. 3. Door de stencils telkens in een andere volgorde en samenstelling te gebruiken, ontstaat er iedere keer een nieuw patroon. De rijstpasta bestaat uit een mix van rijstmeel en water. Deze mix wordt gedurende 50 minuten gestoomd voordat de kleurstof aan de pasta wordt toegevoegd. Nadat de rijstpasta egaal verspreid is over het gehele stencil, wordt het stencil direct verwijderd. Voordat de volgende laag rijstpasta kan worden aangebracht, moet de eerste laag geheel opgedroogd zijn. In het ontwerp op de foto overlappen de kleuren uit de twee lagen elkaar. De kleur die als eerst is gedrukt zal dominant blijven. De gekleurde rijstpasta vormt een dekkende kleur. Iedere daaropvolgende kleurlaag is alleen zichtbaar daar waar deze op de nog onbedrukte zijde terecht komt. Deze wordt aangebracht over de hele print, zonder daarbij gebruik te maken van een stencil. Deze laatste laag bedekt alle onbedrukte delen direct, en vult hiermee de ‘achtergrond’ van het ontwerp in. Zorgvuldig opgerold in katoen en papier worden de kleuren in zo’n 50 minuten gefixeerd door middel van stoom. Dit proces zorgt ervoor dat de kleurstoffen zich geheel binden aan de vezels van de zijde. Het uitgangspunt: wat is een resist print? Simpel gezegd, wanneer je print met een pasta die de stof blokkeert wanneer deze geverfd moet worden, ontstaat er een wit patroon. Er zijn veel verschillende materialen en methoden om mee te werken, afhankelijk van waar je woont. Tijdens deze workshop hebben we ons gericht op het maken van stencildruk dessins op zijde met behulp van rijstpasta. Deze techniek is gebaseerd op de Japanse resist printing techniek Katazome. Speciaal voor deze workshop, ontwikkelde ik een vereenvoudigde versie van de klassieke Katazome techniek. Tijdens deze workshop maakten we gebruik van natuurlijke kleurstoffen. Dit is een proces waar je al gauw een dag mee bezig bent. Omdat ik het leuker vind om een beetje te gokken met de kleuren dan van te voren alle kleurrecepten uit te proberen ontstaan er verrassende combinaties. Op deze manier reproduceer ik niet steeds dezelfde prints maar maak unieke stukken textiel die later met veel zorg bij elkaar worden gebracht in de vorm van een shawl.
