Workshop: Textile printing & dyeing with natural dyes

September 29, 2017

October 27 & 28 (2017), Enschede, The Netherlands

[DUTCH TEXT BELOW] During this workshop you will learn about vegetal dyes which we will thicken with various resources to make them suitable for printing.

About the workshop

We will make stencil prints on silk with rice paste. The technique is based on the Japanese Katazome resist printing method, the precursor of the silkscreen technique that we use nowadays for fabric printing. In this way you create graphic patterns.

Beside that we will use stamps, brushes and other thickners to develop a more freely image. The silk will be dyed with plants from our own surroundings and kitchen waste that we throw away daily like onion and avocado peels.

At the end of this workshop you have printed a number of samples and gained knowledge and inspiration to go on working with this material.

The workshop costs €225,- including basic materials. For more information and registration: cwvanderheide@hetnet.nl

Workshop: Katazome at Ballytoughey Loom (Clare Island, Ireland)

March 03, 2017

Ricepaste print on silk workshop

This summer (2017), I will be visiting Clare Island (Ireland) to give a Katazome workshop. During this workshop we will make stencil prints on silk with rice paste. The technique is based on the Japanese Katazome resist printing method. For the workshop I developed a simplified way of Katazome printing, making use of the natural dyes Clare Island's untamed nature has to offer.

The Process

Day 1: Introduction of technique and my work: Making rice paste, preparing the fabric, cutting stencils, printing 2 pieces of fabric for project 1>1. A and 1.B.
Day 2: Coating with soymilk, making the dyes, apply colours, drying the fabric, fixate piece 1. A Add print on piece 1. B Print 2 pieces of fabric for project 2>2.A and 2.B.
Day 3: Coating with soymilk, making the dyes, apply colours, drying and fixate piece 2.A and 1.B Add print on piece 2.B Apply colours, drying and fixate piece 2.B.  Discuss the work; We can use the left over dyes for some tie-dye projects.

The price is €200 including materials and lunch.

Head over to the website of Ballytoughey Loom for more information.

Exhibition: Textile Patterns at Museum TwentseWelle (2015)

November 13, 2015

Many years after our partnership in the form of Studio BonBon, Alke de Kroes and I joined forces again. During the exhibition ‘Textile Patterns’ (TextielPatronen) at Museum TwentseWelle, Alke and I presented our current work.

Alke designed textiles especially for this exhibition and printed these patterns on tablecloths.  Her inspiration came from the textile collection and archive of the museum; textiles that were made by textile factories in Enschede between 1950 and 1980. Surrounded by a selection of the original designs that inspired her while designing her pattern, the tablecloths were showcased on large tables.

During this exhibition, I displayed a selection of Katazome scarves. The design of my Scarves arises by combining a variety of handcrafted printed silk textile swatches. Hence, every single scarf that leaves my atelier forms a unique piece. The technique that I use for printing is a Japanese resist printing method, known as Katazome.
